Go home refugees! You suck! ....or stay?

Arab refugees should NOT be discouraged to start a new life in a new country.

My name is George Ohan and I was born in Aleppo, Syria. I am also a U.S. Army veteran; eight years active duty.

This message is for the Arabs and many other people around the world that are forced to become refugees in this time of turmoil and conflict. Do not be discouraged to live the life that you imagine for yourself. You CAN make your desired life your reality; just like I did.

In 1981 my family had to leave Syria and ended up in Los Angeles, CA. My parents didn’t speak any English, and Hollywood was much different than anything they had seen. 

My suggestion to refugees is to avoid watching mainstream news outlets and avoid reading anything published  by mainstream news outlets. News in America and around the world is BIG business. The more drama and negativity that a story has, the more viewers a news company can possibly get to watch that story. Viewers = Money.  Right now “refugees and war” is their main business model. The news companies report the stories that they want to tell and sell. They scare the people in foreign countries to think that a “refugee” is a terrorist. What’s your story as a refugee? Have you seen that version on the news?

Do not be discouraged by tactics of hate. Do not react with hate and anger. Do not lose focus on the perfect life that you imagine for yourself. If you are reading this, then you still have a chance to become anything that you want to become in your life. You still have the chance to do the things that you have always wanted to do with your life. Plan it, and do it.

Honestly, I do not believe that people in America are afraid of terrorists moving into their neighborhoods. Maybe they are afraid to see hard working Arabs or “refugees” coming into their neighborhoods because refugees might start to be successful in the same places that the locals have been struggling? 

 Take me for example:

1. I had 3 jobs in high school (age 14 - 17)
2. I joined the U.S. Army at 17 years old
3. I was promoted to Sergeant by 20 years old
4. I was promoted to Staff Sergeant by 23 years old
5. I graduated with 2 U.S. college degrees
6. I was voted as alumni President for Veterans of my college
7. I was voted as the Student Veterans of America, chapter President
8. I have started 5 businesses on my own, and 2 with partners
9. I have helped Americans start over 100 businesses
10. I was voted as Chapter Captain of Team Red, White & Blue

The list of success can go on, but I hope that you get my point…. I didn't take those positions from anyone. I EARNED everything by working harder than those people around me. Usually when people don't like me, it's because their laziness is exposed when they are compared to me. The work ethic of a motivated and hungry immigrant is hard to match by average locals in any country. It's called a sense of "urgency", but media will try to call it an "insurgency."

I’m happy that my parents did not take the advice of many Americans when they were told things like, “Go back to your country.” 

When I was selected, voted, or promoted to positions of higher authority and responsibility nobody ever said, “Hey! That guy is a Syrian immigrant! Send him back to his country!” People were happy that I was the right person for the job. I, George Ohan, a Syrian immigrant have been beating Americans in competition my whole life. I didn’t have any special advantage to be set up for success over any other people. The only thing that I had control over was my attitude and perspective about my situation. I keep my mind focused on my ultimate desires, and my chances of success seem to be increasing significantly.

Refugees will have to work much harder than anyone else to prove who you are, but that’s ok. Proving WHO you are (your character) only shows with time and consistency of your actions. Keep doing the right thing in your new community, do it for the right reasons, do it for a long time, and good results will come from it.

As a refugee, you will identify “friendly” people along your journey. Build on relationships with tolerant people and create lasting friendships with locals. Everybody does not hate refugees. From my experience, I have found that people are very similar around the world. They show love and respect, when love and respect are shown to them and their home.

Seek a mentor in your new community. Figure out how things are done in the new region that you live in, and add value to your new community. Home is where you make it. You have a huge opportunity to show the world about the love and caring that your culture offers.

MEET DAVID LEE

The Early Years

Lee was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.  He migrated to California to attend California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech) in Pasadena where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  During that time, he was married and subsequently had three children.  Years later, he would continue his education at the University of Southern California (USC) from which he obtained a Ph.D in mechanical engineering, and much later a Masters degree in Counselor Education.  While at USC, he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship Society.

Work HistoryDuring the course of his professional career, which has spanned six decades, Lee amassed a diversified background of work experience, ranging from research and science to manufacturing and psychological counseling to self-help education and marketing.  It has been a career distinguished not only by its diversity but by a record of innovation and creative achievements.

A brief review of his work experience:
· Garrett AiResearch (Designer) - His first work position, Lee designed the test equipment that ensured that motors, turbines and other
   engine parts worked properly.
· Firestone Tire and Rubber (Designer) - Working in its Guided Missile Division, Lee designed rocket engines, valves and other parts for the Corporal II missile, the nation’s first ballistic missile.
· Weber Aircraft (Designer) - Lee designed ejection seats for the B52 airplane.
· Mattel (Designer) - Lee designed the talking mechanism for the Chatty Cathy doll.

Ramo Woolridge (Section Head) - Working in its Space Technology Laboratories Division, Lee was in charge of all design for the mechanical portions of the LEM engine which was the one that landed astronauts on the moon.  He was also responsible for the design of valves, release mechanisms, unique vacuum chambers that simulate space as well as rocket engines.  For one project, he flew for three weeks in the Zero Gravity aircraft at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (see photos).

Mechanics Research, Inc. (Vice President R&D/Marketing) - Lee joined the company as its seventh employee and eventually become a part owner.  

Taylor Devices (West Coast Technical Director) - During his employment with this company, which manufacturers dampers and shock absorbers, Lee invented and patented several products.  He also functioned in marketing and sales and was   awarded salesman of the year for the United States.

Marriage and Family Therapist/Private Practice - After receiving his degree from USC, Lee opened a practice in Beverly Hills and counseled individuals and couples.

Hypnotherapist/Private Practice - Lee obtained a licensed from the state of California and began using hypnotherapy in his practice.  This led to him creating and producing a series of “Guided Relaxation” audio tapes which he marketed on subjects such as losing weight, relieving stress and stopping smoking, etc.  

Government Consultant - Lee occasionally consulted for various government entities.  One such assignment resulted in the  Los Angeles City Council starting a seismic vulnerability evaluation program for all structures in the city.

Why do I need a blog?

The purpose of my blog is to document how I'm feeling, thinking, and blog whatever I'm willing to express at this point of my life.  If someone else comes across the words, videos, or art that I post it should have some thought provoking affect on them.  As for me, if I've posted anything to my blog it's only because I've had a thought provoking situation in my life.  This is a free space to read or write anything that I feel like is appropriate at the time that I blog about it.  Anyone that reads my blog is free to express their opinions without a fear of backlash or offending me.  I encourage an educated exchange of thoughts and ideas at any time.

Blogs are valuable because it let's individuals get into a very personal space of other people.  If a person is trying to engage a specific audience they can see what that group of people are blogging about so they will know what is important to them.    Small businesses and large companies alike can use this information to target products and services toward the right clients.  Many companies make marketing mistakes that result in wasting a lot of money because they don't spend enough time understanding who their target audience is.  If those same companies had a social media specialist that understood blogs they can reverse that trend and hit the demographic that they are seeking.

Success fueled by ambition - Community Leader / US Army Veteran George Ohan

Ambition:

Some of us have it and others of us need it.  Below are some thoughts that I put together with the studies of Jim Rohn and many other philosophies that I’ve studied.  The difference between success and failure can be a few simple habits.  A few errors in judgments repeated everyday will get you to fail.  Bad habits will show their results a long time after they’re developed.  Thoughts on success below:

Disciplined, Eager, Desire = True ambition.

1.         Success is a minute-by-minute, day-by-day mentality.  Living a successful life isn’t easy; if it were easy most people would have money.  What’s the major difference between people doing good or bad?

2.         Dreams must be well defined, wishes are fuzzy.  Your dreams must be vivid.   Do you know exactly what you want?  Write it out.  I want to see a 10-year plan.  If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

3.         Nothing is an over night success… diligence is the mother of good luck.  Tough it out with intelligence, continue to educate yourself.  Continue to get better each day.

4.         You’ll be as happy as you allow yourself to be right now.  Don’t be depressed because you are working your way toward success.  Learn to celebrate your achievements.  It’s good to acknowledge your accomplishments on your path of success. 

5.         Big achievements come one small advantage at a time.  Enjoy who you are becoming every day.   You will change daily during your transformation to becoming the person that you know you can be.  You have the power to mold your life. 

6.         Use the ability and power of your mind to build up your success.  Success is a pleasure.  You must be fulfilled with what you are doing today.  Are you happy with your life as it is?  Enjoy the process of becoming successful.  Can you write your successes at the end of each day?  Look for a pattern of what you think is successful.

7.         Try going to bed 30 minutes sooner.  Just try it for 2 weeks.  You’ll get more done and you’ll feel better, just do it.  Start changing how you think, act, and treat others, life will respond to you in the same respect.  Be kind.  What small changes can I start making today? 

8.         Take charge of your personal happiness.  You can’t be successful by yourself.  You have the help of the people around you.  Thank them.   Let the people around you know that you appreciate them.  We are an average of the top 5 people that we spend the most time around.

9.         Keep your mind on your course.  Remember your path.  Your goals will push you forward, but you must remember what your ultimate desire is.  People have already paved the way for us.  They had nothing, and ended up with something great.  These people turned their focused dreams to a reality of success.  Seek them out and research how they did it.  Take the time to talk with successful people.  They might have already walked down the roads that we’re trying to walk down currently. 

10.       Ambition is not being greedy.  It is an eager desire to achieve, to prosper.  Desire is what you want for yourself.  Ambition is how you get there.  Ambition is an expression.  It is something inside of you. 

What are your reasons for creating the dreams that you have? 

Why is it so important to achieve these dreams? 

Does it make you feel good?

Is it for your family?

What has you inspired to be ambitious?

What is the power behind your ambition?

11.       Self-interest is ok; it is not selfish.  You are benefited by giving service to others.  It must be enlightened; make an investment in the service of others.  Always do more than what you’re paid for.  It is an investment in your future.  You will stand out.

12.       Give the gift of attention.  Life responds to give us what we deserve, not what we need.  The ancient law works like, “if you plant, you will reap” …. In order to find ideas, contacts, and hope, you must search. You must go to where you need to be.  It will not come to you.

13.       Life is not a passing of time.  You must have the discipline to act on your life.  Everything affects everything else.  Everything matters.  Save money or don’t save money. Exercise or no exercise? It all matters.

14.       Don’t let up; you can’t ease up.  When you’re at work; work.  Vacation is for rest.  Be disciplined, get your health back, get your bank account where it’s supposed to be, get your family in order. 

 15.      Ambition - it is an eager desire to get more out of life.

16.       Don’t blame others for failures.  It is in your best interest to follow up on everything that affects you.  You are responsible for everything that happens or fails to happen every minute of your life.

17.       Your life will change when YOU change.  Take full responsibility for yourself; whatever your paycheck is… Is that your worth?

How To Develop A Pitch For Your Screenplay: A Case Study

Would you like to see how a pitch gets developed for a screenplay?

A screenwriting client of mine gave me permission to use his project as an example.

What you’re about to see is the first phase of researching and developing a pitch, using my client’s feature film idea as a case study. This process will not only help you to improve your pitch; it will also build your expertise in the genre so that you are the kind of writer executives want to hire.

Step 1: Draft The Initial Short Pitch

If you already have a short pitch, great. If not, try the following formula with five elements:

“My story is a (genre) called (title) about (hero) who wants (goal) despite (obstacle).”

I like starting with this formula because it forces the clarification of the dramatic conflict. Typically, a story that is clear can be framed in terms of an entity (the hero) that is seeking something (the goal) despite some significant problem (the obstacle).

Our goal is to clarify the five elements and make them more compelling. This means that the changes we make may seem small (e.g., exchanging one word for another), but they will have large implications because we’re working at the DNA-level of the story.

Using the formula, here’s my client’s initial pitch:

It’s a comedy called Nerd Ops about the National Security Administration’s nerdiest technical people who must become field operatives to save the world from a terrorist hacker organization.”

Step 2: Identify Possible Genres

Genre gives context to the project, suggests a structure for the story, and has implications for budget, scope, and potential revenue. The 1-2 words you use to categorize your project, therefore, should be chosen with care.

For Nerd Ops, is “comedy” the best description of genre? Could we find something more specific?

You may already know how your project should be categorized. If not, here’s a way to generate ideas for genre descriptions:

• Go to boxofficemojo.com;
• Look for produced projects that are the most like your idea;
• See how they are classified.

Using this strategy, and given the core concept of nerdy technicians becoming field operatives, here are some possible genres:

• Dark comedy
• Buddy comedy
• Action comedy
• Spy comedy

Step 3: Identify Themes

While I do believe that it’s important for a finished project to have one core thematic premise, at this stage we’re interested in looking at themes more broadly.
Here are some themes that I could see being relevant:

• Weaknesses can be strengths (and strengths weaknesses)
• Warriors for the 21st century
• The brotherhood (and sisterhood) of geekdom
• Humans vs. machines

Step 4: Identify Structural Elements

Structural elements are aspects of the project which are obvious and relevant but which you don’t want to classify as themes.
Some structural elements of this story could be:

• The culture of elite hackers
• The NSA recruiting process
• “Hell Week” training
• Powerful supercomputers

Step 5: Brainstorm Comparisons

Now, using the genres, themes, and structural elements as a starting point, let’s generate more projects to which Nerd Ops could be compared:

• Spies Like Us (Dan Ackroyd’s character is a technical genius)
• Hackers (elite hackers work together)
• Stripes (oddballs in the military)
• Mission Impossible 3&4 (technical geek played by Simon Pegg)
• The Recruit (Colin Farrell’s character is a math genius)
• GI Jane (the structure of “Hell Week”)
• The Other Guys (desk jockey cops become field agents)

Step 6: Build A Table To Hold Comparison Data

What we’re going to do now is build a chart full of data. Along the way, we’re going to get ideas for more comparison projects and we’ll add those to the chart.
First, set up a table with twenty rows and nine columns. Those nine columns should read: Title, Genre, Rating, Release Date, Buyer/Distributor, Domestic Box Office (DBO), International Box Office (IBO), Total Box Office (TBO), Pitch.
Second, open two websites: boxofficemojo.com and netflix.com. If you’re not already a Netflix member, you can get a trial membership.

Step 7: Fill In The Table

First, I’ll search boxofficemojo.com for Spies Like Us. I’ll enter the data in my table, then click on the tab for “Similar Movies.” This shows me that there’s a project called This Means War that I hadn’t considered. So I’ll click on that and enter the data. Then, I’ll click on the tab for “Similar Movies,” and repeat the process.
Second, I’ll go to netflix.com and look for the summaries. I highlight them, edit if needed, paste into a text file, then cut and paste into my table.
Third, I’ll click on the genres in boxofficemojo.com that I’m interested in and see what other comparable projects I can find.
Sometimes boxofficemojo.com, netflix.com (or IMDB or Wikipedia) don’t agree on the genre. For example, a comparison project in my table is Knight and Day. Boxofficemojo calls it a comedy; netflix calls it an action comedy. I think it’s an action comedy, but like This Means War, could also be classified as a romantic comedy.
Use the genre and pitch that you think best. The important thing is to collect the data in one place so you can look for patterns.
After poking around in the boxofficemojo and netflix databases, my table looks like this: Good in a Room Nerd Ops Research Example

Step 8: Sort The Table And Look For Patterns

Now, sort the table by clicking on the column for Total Box Office and sort the table with the highest grossing projects at the top.
The point is not to be a slave to the box office and to copy exactly movies that have been successful. Rather, it’s to have the same information that the decision-maker has, and to be able to customize your pitch using that information to showcase what’s original about your project in a way that is compelling to the listener.
Looking at our table, we can start to see patterns:

• It seems that Nerd Ops would be more clearly described as an action comedy rather than a spy comedy (e.g. Austin Powers, Bean).
• The top grossing action comedies are either romantic comedies or buddy pics (e.g., Knight and Day, Rush Hour, The Other Guys)
• Characters who are “desk-jockeys” or “prodigies.”
• Two male heroes.
• A PG-13 rating.
• Titles with 2-3 words.

Step 9: Improve Your Pitch

Now that I’ve done some research and identified patterns, I can change the short pitch and come up with new pitch material.
Here’s the old short pitch, then the new one:

Old:

It’s a comedy called Nerd Ops about the National Security Administration’s nerdiest technical people who must become field operatives to save the world from a terrorist hacker organization.”

New (changes in bold):

It’s an action comedy called Nerd Ops about two competing National Security Administration computer prodigies who must become field operatives and work together to save the world from a terrorist hacker organization.”

Step 10: Test Your New Pitch

At this point, I would begin testing this short pitch to see how I can sharpen and improve the core concept.

Definite Chief Aim and building Master Mind - George Ohan - Napoleon Hill teachings

This words below are what my friends read to me after I read the version in first person out loud. The people that are the closest to you should support you as you build your master mind team. 

* George Ohan you are a globally recognized name for your accomplishments in business and design. You have been sought after for your speaking abilities, and you are getting paid to speak to large groups of people about your experiences. You earn enough money to provide an affluent lifestyle for your parents and your own family. You live your life with a deep inner smile knowing that you chose this path, you created this path, and you did not settle for a job or un-meaningful intimate relationship. You have lived a life with higher standard for yourself. George, you reached these goals by maintaining a pleasing personality and exercising patience. You currently own many businesses, which have loaded your bank account with over $10 million dollars. This amount continues to grow daily at a rapid pace. You have been able to achieve these things by exploring the realm of uncertainty and understanding a deeper you. You continually strategize and plan with your closest friends to maintain the things that you've earned thus far, and to continue your growth as a person. You have discovered how to live a joyful and meaningful life. By the grace of God you are able to pass the things that you've learned to the next generation of your family.

USMC - I would've been a Marine, but I was too FAT

My father was from Syria and my mother was from Lebanon and they decided on moving to the jungle of the United States of America in 1981; Los Angeles.  Years later we had moved 4 hours north to Madera, CA.   I was 16 years old and it was my junior year of high school.  This was the first time that I had realized there was life after graduation.  As I started to pay attention to what was going on around me I noticed a bunch of students getting ready for college.  My parents had never told me about college; how would they know what it was like to get into an American college?  After all, they were Armenian immigrants.    One thing was certain my family LOVED the United States and felt very American.

I drove to the Marine Corps recruiting office in Fresno, CA and ran into two interesting characters.  One man was Sergeant Vernon and the other one was Gunnery Sergeant Gorsky.  Now, mind you..... I was interested in the Marine Corps because I had heard about 1,000 helicopter pilot stories from my friend's dad; Captain Terry Lewis.  He had encouraged me and motivated me about the American military.  When I walked into the USMC recruiting station I heard,"Ahhhh shit!" Then they started laughing quietly.  I walked further into the recruiting station and I heard,"Wassup my man, Ahahahaha..... Ya man, right here."  Sergeant Vernon was pointing at the weight scale while Gunnery Sergeant Gorsky chimed in with,"You're probably gonna be too fat, but I'll get down your basic info anyways."  He asked many random questions, like my address, phone number, and medical history......but he never asked me my name.

These comments had not bothered me in the least bit.  I was just surprised that the Marines weren't super human like I had been taught.  This was my first time having any interaction with Marines, besides from the neighborhood heroes.  I immediately started to assess my situation and decided that this is not the type of people I want to be around.  Sergeant Vernon spoke as if he was an announcer with a drum roll from Gunnery Sergeant Gorsky,"Twoooooo Hundreeeeeeeed and Thirt Teeeeeeee Fiiiiivvveee pounds!!!!"  I put my shoes back on and without uttering a word I slowly walked out of their office and looked toward the other recruiting stations.  It was 9:00pm and the other stations were already shut down for the evening so I went to Taco Bell and stuffed my fat face before going home.

While I was at home the remarks of the recruiters started to bother me.  I knew I was fat.  I knew I needed help.  I knew I wasn't ready to be a Marine, that's why I was there........and my fu*kin name is George Ohan sir.  At 11:15pm I heard a knock at my door at home and when I answered it Sergeant Vernon stood there with a packet of paperwork in his hands ready to be filled out.  I did not invite him in because I was confused of his arrival.  He told us that the USMC had opened up a few slots with weight waivers, blah, blah, blah.  He started getting very aggressive and rude.  A few minutes later my father asked him to leave and Sergeant Vernon said in a very stern voice,"Sir you need to understand that this is America and this is how the system is.  He needs to come with me to Sacramento tonight."  Sergeant Vernon would rather have me go to the Military Entrance Processing Station and fail the height and weight requirements than to disqualify me as an applicant.  Needless to say, my father was not happy and kicked him out of our home.

The next day I went to the Army recruiting station and came across a Soldier by the name of Staff Sergeant Shenefelt.  I'm not going to say he was the best guy or Soldier in the world, but I can say that he took the time to help me.   I walked into the recruiting station and before he asked me any questions about weight, medical, or law violations he asked about my interests and educational goals.  He KNEW I was fat, just like I did.  He also knew to look past that for a moment.  By the time the meeting was done we had put together a workout plan and assessed that I had to lose 65 pounds to qualify for the Army.   I showed up the next afternoon after school and he took me for a run that nearly killed me.  It was just what I needed.

I lost the weight.  I joined the Army.  All I needed was some motivation from a LEADER outside of my family or close circle of friends.  If you are a person in a power position it is imperative to always be the LEADER.  It took a 10 minute conversation for an Army recruiter to recognize my potential and he gave me a shot.  I strived in the military to be named as "Top Soldier" on many occasions and went on to earn numerous awards and commendations while serving active duty in the U.S. Army.  I had also reached the rank of Staff Sergeant (P) promotable before deciding to become a civilian again.

The point I'd like to make is that I did not let the actions of a couple of people that were not representing the Marine Corps the way they should've been determine my future path.  My reactions to their less than honorable behavior is what set the tone to my future success.  I KNEW I was fat, that's why I went to the Marines......for help.  If someone comes to you and expresses a need, it's probably true and worth further investigation.  This can apply for any situation.  Sometimes people just want to talk.  Someone may suffer from PTSD, low self-esteem, depression, etc... If they're reaching out to you please be a friend, be a mentor, be a leader.......just be there.

Sergeant Vernon and Gunnery Sergeant Gorsky, You were right.  My weight prevented me from wearing the same uniform as you.  No hard feelings though.  I served this country honorably for eight years active duty as an Army Soldier and I feel very privileged for having an opportunity to do that.  Currently I help ALL military branches find work in the Film & Television field through an organization called Vets on Set.  I am also the alumni president for veterans at Los Angeles Film School.  Oh ya, I also belong to a group called Veterans in Film & Television located in Hollywood, CA..... not bad for a FAT boy huh?

Positive energy only please

I never know what obstacle will be thrown in front of me at any given moment.  The one thing that I do know is that I do not respond to negativity with negativity.   In the last month my van has been vandalized with graffiti, my iphone4 was dropped & cracked, and a studio that we shot at mysteriously couldn't find two of my C-stands when we wrapped up our shoot (filmmaking equipment - value $350 LOST).   Each time I have a mis-fortune in my life I use it to make myself a sharper producer and person.  It forces me to be in a state of chaos, so I MUST figure out what to do in a very little amount of time.  For instance, today my phone was stolen and now I have an iPhone4 again because I had to figure out a way to communicate immediately.  If my phone didn't get stolen maybe I wouldn't have taken the initiative to figure out how I can get my iPhone4 fixed for an affordable price?  Thank you very mucho to www.LAiPhoneRepair.com - Jonathan was on his job!  3169 W.
