Steps to Freelancing video and media content Full-Time - @georgeohan on Instagram

Stats show that more people are

leaving their jobs to work for themselves

  1. Build A Network of Clients

One of the most crucial things one can do when making the jump from working for someone to working for yourself is building a network of clients. This can be gradual as you build your portfolio and clientele. Networking is important—even when you work for yourself. If you create a good name for yourself and your work through your current clients, you’ll be able to build on that. Get your name out there!

  1. Define Your Rate

Okay, you have some clients—now what? Defining your rate (and sticking to it) is crucial to making the jump to full-time freelance. Freelance rates are a heavily debated topic, as your experience level will depend on how much you should charge. With that being said, sometimes you’ll have to compromise with certain clients (especially starting out), but once you’ve become established, it will be easier to navigate and put your foot down with a set rate. Here’s an article that will help you calculate your rate.

  1. Maintain A Regular Schedule

Most people who work freelance prefer it because they’re able to have a flexible schedule—working when they choose. This appeals to many who want to work outside of a traditional 9-to-5. However, when you make the jump to full-time, it’s crucial to maintain some kind of regular schedule. As your work life and personal life become more blended, you should aim to maintain a sense of when you’re “in office” and “out of office” in order to create boundaries for yourself and your work. Sometimes this includes working on weekends. The good thing is that it’s up to you!

  1. Keep Track of Invoices & Costs

You’re building your clientele, you’ve set your rate, and you’re maintaining a regular schedule. The next thing you want to do is keep track of your invoices, as you (typically) are your own accountant. Using invoice tracking software can help you see your month-to-month income and stay organized when adding up fees. It’ll also be able to help you see how your negotiated rate can really add up!

  1. Maintain an Online Presence

Your online presence is more and more important these days for self-promoting your work, but it especially is if you work for yourself and need to meet new clients. Their impression of you is most likely to start by your online presence, whether it’s your Twitter, Instagram, website, or all of the above. This goes hand-in-hand with the service you’re providing too. If you’re solely a freelance photographer, Instagram may be the main route for you to showcase your work. If you’re a writer, you may want to have both a website of links to your writing and also stay active on Twitter so potential clients can immediately see your writing tone.

  1. Prepare for Unpredictability

The freelance world is one of flexibility—but also unpredictability. The economy’s changing landscape comes with perks like working from home and if you’re full-time freelance, working when you want and how you want. However, this goes hand in hand with some months being more fruitful than others. By nature, your workload and income can change each month. With that being said, you’ll have to be fully prepared for ebbs and flows, but that’s just part of the process. As you shape your own work days, prepare for freedom but also buck up, because now you are your own boss.

THAT'S A LOT!
Let us do it for you....

Let's consider this:
How many steps did it take
to create this blog post?
a LOT.

Why do I, as a
Digital Content Producer,
create content?

Let's find out!

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?

WHY CREATE THIS BLOG?

**The Answer...
I only need about 10 people
to see this one blog post,
and I will turn that into a
"Sale" directly, or I will
send a "referral" to a friend
who can convert that
person into a Sale, by
offering a needed service
to him or her.

It only takes ONE person,
to be interested in ONE thing,
that I do, for us to do business...

DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD PHOTOS
IN A HARD DRIVE?  I did...

That's MONEY, just sitting there getting dusty...

THE PHOTO ABOVE
WAS SAVED IN A
HARD DRIVE, A FEW
MINUTES BEFORE THIS
BLOG WAS CREATED.

I knew if I create this post,
I am giving myself one more chance
to find the person
who needs my help...

Here it goes again.......

My wife and I create all of the content.

CONTENT:
Home decor items, purchase dresses for re-sale on Digital Vintage, photography to market the products, social media copyright, and blogs for digital distribution.

People need help from
DIGITAL CONTENT BROKERS and
DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS.

WHY?....
Small business people usually don't
understand HOW or WHAT to purchase
when it comes to Digital Marketing.

I can help you with that.

I offer consultations and I can explain
what it means to convert your business
to operating on Digital Platforms.

When was the last time you had a
personal or business
financial review?

I KNOW A GUY who offers
complimentary consultations.

Too EASY!

(Why would I add the section below?)
Answer: SEO
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

I want this Blog to be found in searches,
so I add some extra descriptions to help
give the blog a higher chance of being found.

If I can do ALL of this with ONE old photo,
can you imagine how much content you're sitting on?
a LOT.

GOLD NUGGETS for filmmakers below

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpI-Mi9RpHo

YouTube video description:

I spent a couple of days doing research for a very talented
Production Designer and course director, Barbara Dunphy
(IMDb her, she's awesome!)
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0242986/

The information is for a scene from Ernest Hemingway's Hills Like White Elephants.

I hope that this research can help somebody else in the future. I learned a LOT about filmmaking and becoming a producer while gathering this information.

My favorite part of the research was meeting all of the cool people that I will be working with in the near future! Richard Adkins at History for Hire was a tremendous help to me with his willingness to HELP!

I also felt like I was bothering Micah Embry (Art Department- micah.embry@gmail.com), but she didn't let that stop her from showing me around and helping me come up with a list of the exact things that I'd need. After my trip to History for Hire I took Micah's suggestion and went to Western Costume Co in North Hollywood. The staff welcomed me with open arms.

Jackie, Bill (after I found him), Frank and my smiling friend Susan were very generous with their time and knowledge! (*I forgot a couple of names from the Men's dept. in the back, but I didn't forget the HELP.) I greatly appreciate everyone's help. Thank you! Very Respectfully George Ohan Filmmaker The footage was shot using the iPhone 4 and edited using Final Cut Pro. Go APPLE!

I'm happy that I was robbed in Puerto Rico.

Positive Attitude is not a gimmick; It’s my way of life.

I choose gratitude as my tool for maintaining a positive attitude. I enjoy living a happy life by showing gratitude to the people that I deal with. It is a CHOICE to live happy. You can choose to be happy too.

People get “positivity” confused with “fantasy” sometimes.

Positivity doesn’t mean that bad things don’t happen to me. Positivity doesn’t mean that the universe must favor me or any of my plans. Positivity doesn’t even guarantee success after you spend a lifetime doing the “right thing” along your journey. Positivity DOES give you the tool to handle any negative situation, by always looking for the good no matter what you are faced with.

The  night before Thanksgiving 2015 in San Juan, Puerto Rico somebody smashed the window of our car at the Afrika Club. We were there to film a live performance of recording artist Eddie Lamenaza, but when we got back to our car from checking in with the club manager, the film and audio equipment was gone. Any "indie" filmmaker knows how bad this sucks.

A few of the items were:
Canon DSLR Camera
2 Lenses
H5 Zoom Audio
Lavalier Microphone
SD Cards
Batteries

Why did this happen to me? Am I a bad person? Is this Karma from something that I did when I was 16 years old? Where is this negativity coming from?

……..NONE of those questions matter.

I started to think about: I volunteer with veterans, I mentor kids, I help non-profit organizations, I treat people well, I even take my dog to the beach…… So, why me?

……..NONE of those things matter either.

(Brendan Masters, San Diego, CA - Plays Buckets. No Excuses.)

I DO what I do because it makes ME happy. The universe doesn’t trade my good deeds for a lower amount of negativity that can come my way. I can’t control WHAT happens to me in my life. We only have control of about 10% of anything that happens in our lives. I only have control over my reaction when something good or bad happens to me.

Fact: My film & audio equipment is gone.
Fact: It’s time for my reaction…….

I kept it cool. I thought to myself, “Good. I hope he bought his family a nice Thanksgiving Day dinner with the money he got for that stuff.”

“Maybe this is a sign that I needed to put the camera down, and focus on bigger things?”

“Now I have an opportunity to learn PhotoShop more. Or maybe I can buy a better camera? Oh damn, we should call the cops.”

That was my REAL reaction. I didn’t react this way because it would look better for a blog. I didn’t react this way because I thought that it would help to magically bring my stuff back. I reacted this way because I KNEW my stuff was gone. I could not control that situation from happening to me. I also knew that anger, hate, and over-thinking only leads to the BAD me.  Positivity and forward-thinking take a massive amount of work to achieve.

I do everything that I can to protect my mind and spirit from any negative thoughts entering or being created within myself.

Why would I poison myself with hate because somebody chose to do something bad to me? It doesn’t make sense to make myself FEEL bad for something that I didn’t have any control over.

Staying positive helps me keep a clear mind so I can make better decisions in tough times.

(Combat Veteran, USMC (Ret.) CPL Juan Dominguez; A HAPPY guy)

I didn’t post this on Facebook when it first happened because it was one day before a holiday break. I didn’t want people to see negativity on their timelines, and I’m happy that I did that.  It gave me time to focus on being happy with the people around me, instead of waiting to read the comments on a post about something bad that happened to me. By choosing to not post about this situation, I have been able to keep my mind clear of negativity.

Negativity destroys creativity, and I can’t afford that.

Thank you to my friend Luiz Burgos (U.S. Navy Veteran) for inviting us to enjoy Thanksgiving Day with his family in Caguas, PR. I'm happy that I didn't make an excuse of having a broken window to not go from Bayamon to Caguas to enjoy time with our Puerto Rican family. Saying YES is part of the happiness equation.

Let's Party!

Success fueled by ambition - Community Leader / US Army Veteran George Ohan

Ambition:

Some of us have it and others of us need it.  Below are some thoughts that I put together with the studies of Jim Rohn and many other philosophies that I’ve studied.  The difference between success and failure can be a few simple habits.  A few errors in judgments repeated everyday will get you to fail.  Bad habits will show their results a long time after they’re developed.  Thoughts on success below:

Disciplined, Eager, Desire = True ambition.

1.         Success is a minute-by-minute, day-by-day mentality.  Living a successful life isn’t easy; if it were easy most people would have money.  What’s the major difference between people doing good or bad?

2.         Dreams must be well defined, wishes are fuzzy.  Your dreams must be vivid.   Do you know exactly what you want?  Write it out.  I want to see a 10-year plan.  If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

3.         Nothing is an over night success… diligence is the mother of good luck.  Tough it out with intelligence, continue to educate yourself.  Continue to get better each day.

4.         You’ll be as happy as you allow yourself to be right now.  Don’t be depressed because you are working your way toward success.  Learn to celebrate your achievements.  It’s good to acknowledge your accomplishments on your path of success.

5.         Big achievements come one small advantage at a time.  Enjoy who you are becoming every day.   You will change daily during your transformation to becoming the person that you know you can be.  You have the power to mold your life.

6.         Use the ability and power of your mind to build up your success.  Success is a pleasure.  You must be fulfilled with what you are doing today.  Are you happy with your life as it is?  Enjoy the process of becoming successful.  Can you write your successes at the end of each day?  Look for a pattern of what you think is successful.

7.         Try going to bed 30 minutes sooner.  Just try it for 2 weeks.  You’ll get more done and you’ll feel better, just do it.  Start changing how you think, act, and treat others, life will respond to you in the same respect.  Be kind.  What small changes can I start making today?

8.         Take charge of your personal happiness.  You can’t be successful by yourself.  You have the help of the people around you.  Thank them.   Let the people around you know that you appreciate them.  We are an average of the top 5 people that we spend the most time around.

9.         Keep your mind on your course.  Remember your path.  Your goals will push you forward, but you must remember what your ultimate desire is.  People have already paved the way for us.  They had nothing, and ended up with something great.  These people turned their focused dreams to a reality of success.  Seek them out and research how they did it.  Take the time to talk with successful people.  They might have already walked down the roads that we’re trying to walk down currently.

10.       Ambition is not being greedy.  It is an eager desire to achieve, to prosper.  Desire is what you want for yourself.  Ambition is how you get there.  Ambition is an expression.  It is something inside of you.

What are your reasons for creating the dreams that you have?

Why is it so important to achieve these dreams?

Does it make you feel good?

Is it for your family?

What has you inspired to be ambitious?

What is the power behind your ambition?

11.       Self-interest is ok; it is not selfish.  You are benefited by giving service to others.  It must be enlightened; make an investment in the service of others.  Always do more than what you’re paid for.  It is an investment in your future.  You will stand out.

12.       Give the gift of attention.  Life responds to give us what we deserve, not what we need.  The ancient law works like, “if you plant, you will reap” …. In order to find ideas, contacts, and hope, you must search. You must go to where you need to be.  It will not come to you.

13.       Life is not a passing of time.  You must have the discipline to act on your life.  Everything affects everything else.  Everything matters.  Save money or don’t save money. Exercise or no exercise? It all matters.

14.       Don’t let up; you can’t ease up.  When you’re at work; work.  Vacation is for rest.  Be disciplined, get your health back, get your bank account where it’s supposed to be, get your family in order.

 15.      Ambition - it is an eager desire to get more out of life.

16.       Don’t blame others for failures.  It is in your best interest to follow up on everything that affects you.  You are responsible for everything that happens or fails to happen every minute of your life.

17.       Your life will change when YOU change.  Take full responsibility for yourself; whatever your paycheck is… Is that your worth?

Thank you for reading.  I apologize for the format of this blog
.  I am not really a writer, just some guy with some thoughts.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

Positive energy only please

I never know what obstacle will be thrown in front of me at any given moment.  The one thing that I do know is that I do not respond to negativity with negativity.   In the last month my van has been vandalized with graffiti, my iphone4 was dropped & cracked, and a studio that we shot at mysteriously couldn't find two of my C-stands when we wrapped up our shoot (filmmaking equipment - value $350 LOST).   Each time I have a mis-fortune in my life I use it to make myself a sharper producer and person.  It forces me to be in a state of chaos, so I MUST figure out what to do in a very little amount of time.  For instance, today my phone was stolen and now I have an iPhone4 again because I had to figure out a way to communicate immediately.  If my phone didn't get stolen maybe I wouldn't have taken the initiative to figure out how I can get my iPhone4 fixed for an affordable price?  Thank you very mucho to www.LAiPhoneRepair.com - Jonathan was on his job!  3169 W. Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90068 (323) 883-0838.
