How to Book a job or gig as an indie filmmaker

DISCLAIMER:  There are many ways of doing many things.  Below you will read about one way of making money as an independent filmmaker.  There may be more effective ways that you like better.  Please take the time to research what works best for you.  READING is a MUST.  If you need help with anything below, you can contact me at georgeohan@gmail.com
-------------------------------------

Independent filmmakers usually have a hard time making money....  Why?  Well,  I think it is because most of them are actually artists, rather than business people.  So, artist....If you no longer want to be known as a "starving artist" please begin to develop habits that will result in booking more work.

The fact of the matter is that the film industry is just like any other business when it comes to producing content.  We NEED customers.  We must SEEK our target audience.  People must KNOW what we do.  This is a numbers game.  The more people that you DIRECTLY ask for business, the more gigs you will book.

This model is based on shooting HD video content and photography for: small businesses, music artists, bands, events, short films, YouTube content, documentaries, and feature length films.

As a filmmaker, when people ask me ,"What do you do?"  My response is,"I'm a producer."  That's when I notice a blank stare.  After seeing this same result several times I knew that I had to communicate more effectively.   The general public does not know that a producer is responsible for: actors, locations, contracts, craft services, equipment, crew, post production, and everything else it takes to PRODUCE one project.  When I explained this information to my potential clients, they took my offer a lot more seriously.

A few of the steps that have increased my chances of booking more work have been:

1.  Set solid goals that I want to hit. Sales, income, follow-ups, social media posts, training.
2.  Gather a minimum of 3 business cards daily (Follow up with email less than 72 hours)
3.  Teach business model to all potential partners/crew so they can book work for us too
4.  Write treatments and pitch to businesses about creating a commercial for them
5.  Advertise on my personal social media TELLING people what I do
6.  Talk to 10 people that I do NOT know daily (Build Relationships)
7.  Research, Research, Research. (Potential clients have a NEED; find it)
8.  Follow-up with past customers and gage satisfaction
9.  Set a minimum of 5 appointments per week to discuss HD content creation
10.  Designate a time for follow-ups, marketing emails, and face to face appointments
11.  Search the websites on flyers and promotional items from various places in town
12.  Update all of contact information on various websites and social media
13.  Have a price list, scope of work, and completion times readily available for clients
14.  I volunteer on many sets just to meet more people and book future gigs
15.  Offer much more than just HD content creation; help with social media too
16.  Ask effective, fact finding, open-ended questions to figure out if a person needs my service

In my opinion it is every crew member's responsibility to help book work.  A producer and a director will have an extremely hard time trying to do this on their own.  It is much more effective when an entire group of people are working closely to book gigs.

Producer, Director, 1st AD, UPM, Gaffer, Grip, Editor, Art Director, VFX artist, Production Designer, can all help with the mission of booking gigs.   If your team knows that the producer can make it happen once the job is booked, you will be much more successful.

You MUST talk to a lot of people.  They MUST know what you do.  You MUST effectively communicate your objective.  Follow-ups are a MUST.  Professionalism and proper presentation is a MUST.

Success fueled by ambition - Community Leader / US Army Veteran George Ohan

Ambition:

Some of us have it and others of us need it.  Below are some thoughts that I put together with the studies of Jim Rohn and many other philosophies that I’ve studied.  The difference between success and failure can be a few simple habits.  A few errors in judgments repeated everyday will get you to fail.  Bad habits will show their results a long time after they’re developed.  Thoughts on success below:

Disciplined, Eager, Desire = True ambition.

1.         Success is a minute-by-minute, day-by-day mentality.  Living a successful life isn’t easy; if it were easy most people would have money.  What’s the major difference between people doing good or bad?

2.         Dreams must be well defined, wishes are fuzzy.  Your dreams must be vivid.   Do you know exactly what you want?  Write it out.  I want to see a 10-year plan.  If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

3.         Nothing is an over night success… diligence is the mother of good luck.  Tough it out with intelligence, continue to educate yourself.  Continue to get better each day.

4.         You’ll be as happy as you allow yourself to be right now.  Don’t be depressed because you are working your way toward success.  Learn to celebrate your achievements.  It’s good to acknowledge your accomplishments on your path of success.

5.         Big achievements come one small advantage at a time.  Enjoy who you are becoming every day.   You will change daily during your transformation to becoming the person that you know you can be.  You have the power to mold your life.

6.         Use the ability and power of your mind to build up your success.  Success is a pleasure.  You must be fulfilled with what you are doing today.  Are you happy with your life as it is?  Enjoy the process of becoming successful.  Can you write your successes at the end of each day?  Look for a pattern of what you think is successful.

7.         Try going to bed 30 minutes sooner.  Just try it for 2 weeks.  You’ll get more done and you’ll feel better, just do it.  Start changing how you think, act, and treat others, life will respond to you in the same respect.  Be kind.  What small changes can I start making today?

8.         Take charge of your personal happiness.  You can’t be successful by yourself.  You have the help of the people around you.  Thank them.   Let the people around you know that you appreciate them.  We are an average of the top 5 people that we spend the most time around.

9.         Keep your mind on your course.  Remember your path.  Your goals will push you forward, but you must remember what your ultimate desire is.  People have already paved the way for us.  They had nothing, and ended up with something great.  These people turned their focused dreams to a reality of success.  Seek them out and research how they did it.  Take the time to talk with successful people.  They might have already walked down the roads that we’re trying to walk down currently.

10.       Ambition is not being greedy.  It is an eager desire to achieve, to prosper.  Desire is what you want for yourself.  Ambition is how you get there.  Ambition is an expression.  It is something inside of you.

What are your reasons for creating the dreams that you have?

Why is it so important to achieve these dreams?

Does it make you feel good?

Is it for your family?

What has you inspired to be ambitious?

What is the power behind your ambition?

11.       Self-interest is ok; it is not selfish.  You are benefited by giving service to others.  It must be enlightened; make an investment in the service of others.  Always do more than what you’re paid for.  It is an investment in your future.  You will stand out.

12.       Give the gift of attention.  Life responds to give us what we deserve, not what we need.  The ancient law works like, “if you plant, you will reap” …. In order to find ideas, contacts, and hope, you must search. You must go to where you need to be.  It will not come to you.

13.       Life is not a passing of time.  You must have the discipline to act on your life.  Everything affects everything else.  Everything matters.  Save money or don’t save money. Exercise or no exercise? It all matters.

14.       Don’t let up; you can’t ease up.  When you’re at work; work.  Vacation is for rest.  Be disciplined, get your health back, get your bank account where it’s supposed to be, get your family in order.

 15.      Ambition - it is an eager desire to get more out of life.

16.       Don’t blame others for failures.  It is in your best interest to follow up on everything that affects you.  You are responsible for everything that happens or fails to happen every minute of your life.

17.       Your life will change when YOU change.  Take full responsibility for yourself; whatever your paycheck is… Is that your worth?

Thank you for reading.  I apologize for the format of this blog

Positive energy only please

I never know what obstacle will be thrown in front of me at any given moment.  The one thing that I do know is that I do not respond to negativity with negativity.   In the last month my van has been vandalized with graffiti, my iphone4 was dropped & cracked, and a studio that we shot at mysteriously couldn't find two of my C-stands when we wrapped up our shoot (filmmaking equipment - value $350 LOST).   Each time I have a mis-fortune in my life I use it to make myself a sharper producer and person.  It forces me to be in a state of chaos, so I MUST figure out what to do in a very little amount of time.  For instance, today my phone was stolen and now I have an iPhone4 again because I had to figure out a way to communicate immediately.  If my phone didn't get stolen maybe I wouldn't have taken the initiative to figure out how I can get my iPhone4 fixed for an affordable price?  Thank you very mucho to www.LAiPhoneRepair.com - Jonathan was on his job!  3169 W. Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90068 (323) 883-0838.

"A force this strong and powerful cannot be stopped by small time negative energy.  If my parents are forced to continue working their raggedy jobs, then I am forced to figure out a way to save them."
